In the last 15 years, it has become a lot easier to meet people… or so it seems. All you need is a computer, the comfort of your own home, a glass of wine, your favourite PJs and the world is your oyster… Or is it?
The stigma of meeting people online and the controversy that came with it have long gone. It could be argued that internet dating has become the norm. One of the first things the majority of people who are newly single will do is to create a profile on one of the numerous sites available ‘to see what it’s like and what’s out there’.
A whole industry has actually developed around that side of it alone – professional photos or videos, dating coaches to write profiles and make them more successful, etc…
If you are lucky and ticking the right boxes in the shallow meat market world, you will then attend countless dates. And most probably become disillusioned in the process… because the other person isn’t quite what you thought they were going to be. It could be because they were not as honest as you hoped or simply because you had build an image in your own mind that just wasn’t real.
Whilst the internet provides fantastic opportunities to connect and keep in touch with others, it also provides deception, on numerous levels (we will not discuss the current subjects recently raised by the media around security of information and fake profiles at this point). Our own perceptions and values actually contribute to wanting to believe that what people say is true. It is worth noting that not everyone means to deceive on purpose. Sometimes, it just happens.
It is easier to ‘meet’ someone from behind a computer screen, especially if you are shy, but it’s not real. Chemistry, a debate and real conversations are what it’s all about… Creating memories and having fun with others, enjoying yourself and laughing. It seems people are craving a return to the old fashioned and traditional ways of meeting others – face to face. In that respect, it could be argued it is a lot more difficult to meet like-minded people nowadays.
Are you attracting all the wrong types or no one at all? Are you struggling to meet ‘the one’? The dating roller coaster of emotions can be quite draining… And if you’re serious about meeting somebody, quite disheartening too.
